Discovery consists of seeing what everybody has seen and
thinking what nobody has thought.
—American biochemist and Nobel Prize winner Albert von Szent-Gyorgyi
This work pays tribute to the thousands of medical innovators who,
despite the harshest of circumstances and intellectual climates, perse-
vered to accomplish some of the greatest advancements through
which medicine has evolved for the betterment of its patients.
Take the example of the now obvious recommendation that to
avoid spreading infectious diseases, physicians wash their hands and
medical instruments between patient examinations. In the 1850s,
Hungarian physician Dr. Ignas Semmelweiss noticed that fewer of his
patients were dying since he had adopted this procedure. Year after
year, Semmelweiss held steadfastly to the notion that his colleagues
follow his advice. He was called all sorts of names for what was
branded a strange and preposterous theory. In an ironic twist, Sem-
melweiss died of an infectious disease contracted as a patient in a local
hospital.Today we owe a great debt to Dr. Semmelweiss for maintain-
ing an unwavering commitment to his beliefs—beliefs that ultimately
improved medical care for every man, woman, and child in every
nation across the globe.

The great leap in health care of the twenty-first century is offered
by antiaging medicine. A patient-centric, wellness-based model that
delivers life-enhancing and life-extending medical care, antiaging
medicine is a medical specialty that applies advanced scientific and
medical technologies for the prevention, early detection, treatment,
and reversal of age-related diseases. It is a health care model promot-
ing innovative science and research to prolong the healthy life span in
humans. As such, antiaging medicine is based on principles of sound
and responsible medical care that are consistent with those applied in
other preventive health specialties.
As Dr. von Szent-Gyorgyi intimated, the success of antiaging
physicians, health practitioners, and scientists is in their ability to see
what everyone else has seen but to think anew with this evidence. To
this spirit of unbridled creativity and relentless pursuit of the same,
the authors pay tribute and dedicate this work. May each of us alive
today, and the generations to follow, reap the life-enhancing, life-
extending benefits of the seeds that the innovative science of antiaging
medicine is sowing today.
With our most sincere wishes for your personal longevity.
